Tips to Prevent Chapped and Dry Lips in Winter

ByNandhinipriya Ganeshan - April 13, 2022

Winter can be cruel to our lips as they get dry due to the cold and chilling air. Since the lips are thin and very delicate, we need to take extra care of them. Ensure that your lips are moisturized enough as they dry out faster when compared to the rest of the skin on your face. When the temperature drops, our water intake goes down; therefore, the body's moisture levels get reduced. Your lips show the hydration levels of your body. When your lips look dry, chapped, and damaged, then it represents that your body needs more fluids. Rather than using creams and lotions, try to drink a few glasses of water to keep you hydrated. You can also consume soups or tea, which also helps to keep you warm.

Here are a few Tips to Prevent Chapped Lips

Don't Lick or Bite Your Lips

Don't lick or bite your lips when they are dry. Licking your lips is natural to make them moist, but your saliva makes them dry faster. It may moisturize for a while, but it makes the dryness worse. Whenever your lips feel dry, apply lip balms freely on your lips to hydrate them. Moreover, don't touch your lips unnecessarily because the germs and bacteria in your hands can infect your lips and worsen them as well.

Apply Lip Balm Regularly

Using lip balms containing menthol, eucalyptus, and camphor can dry your lips and worsen your problem, so try to avoid these kinds of products. Treat your lips with ointment-based lip balms that contain essential oils, glycerin, and petroleum, which locks the moisture and helps to heal cracks in your lips. Moreover, avoid mouth breathing because it dries your lips quickly. Reapply lip balm whenever your lips get dry. Applying a lipstick coat over lip balm protects your lips from dirt, dry air, and pollution. Using lip balm every night helps prevent your dry and chapped lips.

Treat with Petroleum Jelly

Cracked lips, slits, and flaky skin are common skin issues that occur in the winter season. Refrain yourself from scrubbing your lips when they are cracked or peeled. It is essential to tend to your cracked lips right away so that it heals properly. So, apply petroleum jelly like Vaseline or Vaseline aloe soothe lip care that contains pure aloe vera extracts, which helps soothe and heal your lips. It provides deep moisture to them as well. Use lip balms that have ointment or natural ingredients that heal chapped lips.

Plenty of Water Intake

Using lip care products is essential for lip care in cold weather. However, the intake of plenty of water is also equally important to keep yourself hydrated, which helps eliminate dry and chapped lips. Dehydration is the main cause of dry and chapped lips. So, to fight dryness, keep your lips healthy and moist, ensure to drink an adequate amount of water. This way, you can lower the risk of dry and chapped lips. Try to drink 6-7 glasses of water every day, even during winters.
